What you forget to mention is that the politicians of Jamaica supplied the criminals with guns to secure votes for them in the ghetto communities. Portia Simpson leader of the opposition was caught on camera handing out guns from the trunk of her car and nothing came of it.

You are misreading your "facts". You are making a correlation without proving any causation. Worse, your correlation supports your normative preference and not an empirically-proven preference. Try learning some Jamaican history and learning about garrison communities before publishing such nonsense. For a "regular" blogger, such errors are expected. For an academic blogger, they are not.

Dear K:

The question posed in the piece was a simple one: "Do gun bans really stop criminals from getting guns?" The answer seems pretty straightforward: "no." The conclusion states the obvious that it was law-abiding citizens not criminals who were disarmed. What I also argued was that every place that we have crime data for has seen an increase in murder rates. Please tell me specifically what it is about my conclusion or introduction that you say is wrong. Thanks.

Dear Cameron9119:

The increase in murder rates occurred after the ban. It has continued to go up until now. You have seen increases in murder rates every time that there has been a gun ban. Did every time it fail for the same reason? Was it always bad luck that the ban didn't work out? What is it that you are saying that indicates that gun bans work? Thanks.

It may be difficult to determine causation when you see the rise of murder rates following a gun ban, though the pattern is consistent. I think it is more telling to explore what happens when a gun ban is LIFTED. In Washington, DC this last year murder rates fell a shocking 25% to hit a 45-yr low. Check around.

This type of comparison is only valid if you leave out all other historical facts.

Ahem, such as American and Soviet involvement in local politics.

The JLP and PNP correspond roughly in their overall outlook to Democratic and Socialist. Both countries flooded jamaica with not only guns but money in an attempt to stave off the other superpowers gaining influence in the region.

Those political gangs have since morphed into drug gangs that terrorize the nation.

Jamaica's "crimerate" has it's origins and political gangs, not street gangs and the violence was for votes.

There is no other way to say this than to point out that you simply have no idea what you're talking about.

By the way I'm a Gun owner in the U.S. You can have your views but you can't just pull statistics from an area while having no idea what else is going on in vicinity.

Ultimately you need to make the distinction to between criminals and political thugs because the latter is supplied by the government which is supposed to be enforcing the ban.
