Obama administration pushing legalize cellphone unlocking

Sure people like to own cell phones without restrictions on the network that you can use them on.  But the Obama administration apparently doesn't realize that without locking phones to a particular network they never would have gotten AT&T to adopt the iPhone.  This type of action by the Obama administration could stop future iPhone break throughs from occurring.  See also here.

Uh-huh. Just like when you could only get a telephone - or modem - from Ma Bell. But people kept buying things like a Mickey Mouse shaped phone anyway. And modems for their kit computers. So, it was made legal, albeit regulated to assure connection compliance specs - and everybody did just fine, thank you. Phones and modems got cheap, the idea of merging them into "cell phones" became possible...

Lock it for the term of the contract for use IF it was part of that deal, but not if you actually bought the phone. And allow for conrtract termination (including unamortised cost of the phone if it was supplied by the carrier) with unlocking.
